How the Tournament Group Draw works

This reproduces the familiar mechanic of a major tournament's group-stage draw: shuffle the complete pool of entrants, then deal them round-robin into labelled groups so sizes differ by at most one team — the same balanced-dealing approach Xrandom's Team Shuffler uses for splitting people into teams.

It works for any tournament format, not just football — sports leagues, esports brackets, classroom competition groups, or trivia night teams all fit the same simple group-draw mechanic.

How to use it

1
List your teamsEnter every participating team, one per line.
2
Set the number of groupsChoose how many groups the teams should be split across, for example 2, 4, or 8 for standard tournament brackets.
3
DrawXrandom shuffles all teams and deals them into groups labelled A, B, C and so on, keeping group sizes as even as possible.

Frequently asked questions

Does this account for seeding or avoiding same-country teams?

No — this is a pure random draw with no seeding constraints; real tournament draws often use pots and restrictions that this simple tool doesn't model.

Will group sizes always match exactly?

As close as possible — if teams don't divide evenly across groups, some groups get one extra team.

Can I redraw if I don't like the result?

Yes, press Generate again for a completely fresh, independent draw.
