How the Random Poker Hand Generator works
This is a card dealer and hand-evaluator only — there's no betting, no chips, and no wagering mechanic of any kind, the same spirit as Xrandom's other card tools like the Card Shuffler and Tarot Card Draw. Hand evaluation follows the real rules for each game: for 3-card poker specifically, a Straight ranks above a Flush, which is the opposite of standard 5-card poker — this is mathematically correct, since with only three cards, a straight is genuinely rarer than a flush, unlike in 5-card poker where flushes are rarer.
Cards are dealt from a properly shuffled, complete 52-card deck with no replacement, so every deal reflects genuine card-game probabilities rather than independent random draws that could repeat a card within the same hand.
The number of distinct hands possible is a straightforward combinatorics calculation: 5-card poker has exactly 2,598,960 possible hands (choosing 5 cards from 52, order not mattering), while 3-card poker has exactly 22,100 possible hands (choosing 3 from 52). Every one of those combinations falls into one of the 10 (or 6, for 3-card) hand-rank categories shown after each deal — but very unevenly: in 5-card poker, for example, only 4 of the 2,598,960 possible hands are a Royal Flush, while over 1.3 million are just High Card. That's exactly why hand rankings exist in the first place — rarer combinations are worth more precisely because there are so few ways to make them.

Why does a Straight beat a Flush in 3-card poker but not in 5-card poker?
It comes down to how many of each hand type are actually possible: with only 3 cards there are fewer possible straights than flushes, making a 3-card straight the rarer (and higher-ranked) hand — the reverse is true with 5 cards, which is why standard poker ranks flushes above straights.
