How the Random Chord Progression Generator works
Unlike a purely random note generator, this tool builds progressions from real diatonic harmony: it picks a random root note and mode (major or minor), derives the seven chords that naturally belong to that key using standard scale-degree chord qualities, then arranges four of them using one of several well-known progression patterns (like I-V-vi-IV, the so-called 'pop progression' behind countless hit songs, or ii-V-I, a jazz standard).
The randomness is in which key and which pattern you get — not in the underlying music theory, which stays correct every time. That's what keeps every generated progression sounding musically coherent rather than arbitrary.

Will this always sound musically correct?
Yes — every chord is diatonically correct for the generated key, and every progression pattern is a real, commonly used chord sequence, not a random walk through unrelated chords.
What does the Roman numeral notation mean?
It shows each chord's function relative to the key (I is the tonic/home chord, V is the dominant, and so on) — the same notation used in music theory and lead sheets, independent of which actual key you're in.
Can I get a progression in a specific key?
Not directly — the key is drawn at random along with everything else; if you need a specific key, transpose the resulting progression using standard music theory (shift every chord by the same interval).
